The Winter Olympics 2010, officially known as the XXI Olympic Winter Games, will run from February 12 to 28, 2010 in Vancouver, in the province of British Columbia in Canada. The organizing committee, both for the Paralympic Games that is called in French VANOC and VANOC in English.

These Olympics will be the third held in Canada. Previously, Canada was host to the Summer Olympics of 1976 in Montreal and the Winter Olympics in Calgary in 1988. The village of Whistler, one of the sites where the Games will be held in 2010, had unsuccessfully submitted his candidacy in 1976.

Next Olympic tradition, the former Vancouver Mayor Sam Sullivan received the Olympic flag during the closing ceremonies of the Winter Olympics in Turin in 2006. The flag was hoisted February 28, 2006 during a special ceremony, and has been exposed to the mayor of Vancouver to the opening ceremonies to be held February 12, 2010. As for the Turin Games in 2006, there will be two main competition sites within a maximum of 100 km (or more than 2 hours drive), two Olympic villages, two places of the medals at Vancouver on one hand and Whistler in the chain of the Coastal Mountains on the other. There will be very few connections between populations Olympics, the sport of ice skating and speed, short track, hockey, curling ... competitions which take place in the port city of British Columbia and the snow sports (alpine skiing, biathlon, cross country skiing, ski jumping, Nordic combined ...) that will not go to Vancouver, there understood to receive medals. Special for downhill skiing on the slopes of Whistler Creekside, the finish area will be the same for all races, men and women.

Furthermore, unreported fact, the opening ceremonies, February 12th and closing February 28, did not take place in an outdoor stadium, but in a covered arena, the BC Place Center in downtown city, with a capacity of 55 000 seats. During the two weeks of competition, the BC Place Stadium will be the scene of medal events in ice sports, freestyle skiing and snowboarding competitions which take place on the mountain closest to Vancouver, Cypress Mountain. This decision of VANOC, the organizing committee, was made taking into account the risk weather.
